MUGA floodlighting for schools, clubs and communities

More hours of play for the whole community, lower electricity bills, and lighting that keeps your neighbours onside. That is what good floodlighting brings to a Multi-Use Games Area, and it is what we handle from the first design to the final switch-on.

WHAT WE DO

At SBE, we design and install LED floodlighting for MUGAs across Ireland, whether it sits in a school, a housing estate, a community park, or at the heart of a sports club.

A MUGA is one of the hardest-working spaces a community has, used by a different group almost every hour of the evening, so we make sure the lighting works for all of them and stays on good terms with the houses next door.

Why communities are switching to LED MUGA floodlighting

Good lighting does more than brighten the surface. On a MUGA, it decides how many hours of the day your facility is actually usable and how well it fits into the neighbourhood around it.

Here is what a well-designed LED system does for your MUGA:

More hours for everyone.

Schools by day, clubs and community groups by evening, right through the winter when it is dark by five. Good lighting keeps the gates open for all of them.

One surface, every sport.

Basketball, five-a-side, tennis, netball, hurling, general play. We design the lighting around the full mix of sports your MUGA hosts, not just one.

Lower running costs.

LED floodlights typically cut lighting electricity use by up to 50%, and with the right controls you only pay to light the area when it is actually in use.

Kind to the neighbours.

Careful spill control, a sharp cut-off at the boundary, and timers that switch off at an agreed hour keep light out of nearby homes and keep residents happy.

Built for outdoor public use.

Robust, weatherproof, vandal-resistant fittings stand up to unsupervised use and the Irish weather, so the system keeps working with very little fuss.

What the lighting standards mean for your MUGA

MUGA lighting is measured in lux, which is simply how much light reaches the surface. Because a MUGA hosts several sports on the one area, the design has to suit the whole range of activities rather than a single game.
For most community MUGAs, a maintained level of around 200 lux with good, even uniformity is the benchmark, and it gives clear, comfortable light for recreational and club-level play across all the usual sports.

If one particular sport is played competitively on your surface, we can design up to the level that sport requires. The number on its own is only half the story, though. An even wash of light with no dark corners is what makes the area safe and pleasant to play on, and that is what we design for.

Keeping your neighbours onside

This is the part that makes or breaks a MUGA project, so it deserves its own mention. Because these facilities usually sit close to homes, the most common worry, and the most common planning objection, is light spilling into nearby gardens and windows or lights being left blazing late into the night.

Modern LED optics let us aim the light precisely where it is needed and cut it off sharply at the boundary, with effectively no upward spill. We pair that with timer controls so the lights switch off at an hour agreed with the community and the council, rather than staying on all night. Getting this right up front keeps residents happy and gives your planning application the best possible chance.

A turnkey service, from first design to final switch-on.

The part clubs worry about most is the paperwork and the process.
That is exactly the part we take care of.

Here is what we handle for you:

Free lighting design.

We survey your facility and produce a detailed plan showing where the masts go and the lux levels you will achieve across both the track and the infield.

Installation.

Our team handles the civil works, the masts, the electrics, and the fittings, and leaves your facility tidy.

Planning and permissions.

We prepare the planning application and the light-spill drawings your council needs, and we manage the back-and-forth. Keeping light off nearby homes and roads is a common concern, and we design for it from the start.

Fewer callouts.

We test the finished system against your target lux levels and hand you the documentation to prove it meets the standard.

Grant support.

We help you build the lighting section of your funding application with the quotes and technical detail assessors look for.

Grant-funded projects can run on an 18 to 24 month cycle from first enquiry to switch-on, so it pays to start the conversation early. We will always be straight with you about realistic timelines rather than promising something we cannot stand over.

Cutting your electricity bills with LED

Electricity is one of the biggest running costs any facility carries, and floodlights are a large part of that. Older lamp systems burn through power, take time to warm up, and fade as they age, so you end up paying more for less light.

A modern LED system changes the numbers. You get up to 50% lower lighting energy use, instant full brightness at the flick of a switch, and controls, timers, and booking systems that mean the lights only come on when someone is actually using the area. Over a 20-year lifespan, those savings add up to a serious amount that stays in the community.

Grant support for your lighting project

Most MUGA projects are funded through the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP), now running as the Community Sport Facilities Fund (CSFF). It is the main source of Government funding for sports facilities in Ireland, and MUGAs, used by schools, clubs, and community groups alike, are exactly the kind of shared facility it is designed to support.

Grants can cover a significant share of the cost, with a strong recent emphasis on energy efficiency that plays right into an LED upgrade. We have supported groups through the process before, and we will help you put a lighting application together that stands the best chance when the next round opens.

If you are not sure where your group stands or when to apply, talk to us early and we will point you in the right direction.

How much does MUGA floodlighting cost?

A MUGA is smaller than a full pitch and usually needs fewer, shorter columns, so it tends to cost less to light. The exact figure depends on the size of your area and the level you need. We give you a clear, itemised quote after the free lighting design.

How many lux does a MUGA need?

Around 200 lux with even uniformity is the usual benchmark for multi-sport community use, and we can design higher if a specific sport is played competitively. We confirm the exact figure as part of the design.

Will the floodlights disturb our neighbours?

Not when they are designed properly. We aim the light precisely, cut it off sharply at the boundary, keep upward spill to effectively nil, and fit timers so the lights switch off at an agreed hour.

Can we get a grant for the lighting?

Yes. Most MUGA projects are funded through the Sports Capital grant, now the Community Sport Facilities Fund. We help you prepare the lighting side of the application.

Do we need planning permission?

New floodlighting usually needs planning permission. We prepare the application and the light-spill drawings and manage the process with your local authority, including any timer or curfew conditions.
