What the lighting standards mean for your MUGA
MUGA lighting is measured in lux, which is simply how much light reaches the surface. Because a MUGA hosts several sports on the one area, the design has to suit the whole range of activities rather than a single game.
For most community MUGAs, a maintained level of around 200 lux with good, even uniformity is the benchmark, and it gives clear, comfortable light for recreational and club-level play across all the usual sports.
If one particular sport is played competitively on your surface, we can design up to the level that sport requires. The number on its own is only half the story, though. An even wash of light with no dark corners is what makes the area safe and pleasant to play on, and that is what we design for.
Keeping your neighbours onside
This is the part that makes or breaks a MUGA project, so it deserves its own mention. Because these facilities usually sit close to homes, the most common worry, and the most common planning objection, is light spilling into nearby gardens and windows or lights being left blazing late into the night.
Modern LED optics let us aim the light precisely where it is needed and cut it off sharply at the boundary, with effectively no upward spill. We pair that with timer controls so the lights switch off at an hour agreed with the community and the council, rather than staying on all night. Getting this right up front keeps residents happy and gives your planning application the best possible chance.
